Downloads on the Google Play Store App by Category
Abstract
To analyze the 2026 Google Play Store Apps Dataset to determine the top Categories, User Ratings, Free or Paid, as a business pitch and pre-research for AU or AUGSA to consider pivoting into app development as a growth venture. A special interest on Education Apps is noted, with interest in modelling after best practices to create a series of Education Apps at AU or AUGSA to bridge diversity, promote community inclusion, and improve outreach through a library app, comic book app about a student that links to AU webpages in app, or some other innovations that can be yielded through a student engagement survey.
Questions about a Program Practice App (an app showcasing all the programs at AU with short survey questions about the programs as a way to collect data and entertain curiosity of users. Like a student modelling game, as well as maybe an AI Image Creator or Tool that can increase productivity as a student, or a Relaxation App to listen to after a long day that increases calm and awareness.
If accepted, during the Poster Presentation in October, a short proposed student engagement survey and methodology will be administered to the peer group so that they have a process in selecting the questions and types of questions that will go to the students. The chosen survey (the top 15 questions will be selected from the responses and be administered to engage audience feedback and ongoing research about what type of apps including a Commercialization App, project funding, concept preferences, stakeholders, community, inclusion, budget size, and outreach.

POSTER PRESENTATION
Based on an analysis of Column B (Category) in your active sheet google_playstore_2026, here is a comprehensive breakdown of how apps are distributed across different categories, along with insights on user engagement, ratings, and monetization.
Assumptions Made in This Analysis
- Column B is assumed to represent the Category of the apps (as indicated by the header in row 1).
- Missing ratings (blank cells) are excluded from average rating calculations.
- Non-numeric characters in other columns (such as
+and,in Installs, and$in Price) have been cleaned and parsed to enable aggregations.
Key Takeaway 1: Dominant Categories by App Volume (Quantity)
The Google Play Store is heavily dominated by a few key categories, while many niche categories have limited representation.- The "Big Three": GAME is the largest category with 2,061 apps, followed closely by FAMILY with 1,763 apps and TOOLS with 1,162 apps.
- Market Concentration: Together, these top three categories account for 4,986 apps, which represents 43.4% of all 11,500 apps in the dataset.
- Niche Markets: On the other end of the spectrum, categories like DATING (91 apps), PARENTING (99 apps), and LIBRARIES_AND_DEMO (100 apps) have the lowest representation, indicating specialized niches with less competition.
- This distribution is visualized in the "Number of Google Play Store Apps by Category" chart, which displays the total count of apps for each of the 36 categories.
Key Takeaway 2: Disconnect Between App Volume and User Engagement (Installs)
A high number of available apps in a category does not always translate to high user adoption, revealing where the real audience demand lies.- The FAMILY Powerhouse: While GAME has the most apps, FAMILY completely dominates user engagement with over 1.34 billion total installs (more than 4.5 times the installs of the GAME category, which has 292.6 million).
- High-Efficiency Categories: EDUCATION is a standout category. Despite having only 107 apps (ranking 30th in volume), it ranks 2nd in overall popularity with 532.2 million installs, showing an exceptionally high average install rate per app.
- Saturated Markets: Conversely, FINANCE has a relatively high app count (721 apps) but only 38.5 million installs, indicating a highly saturated market where individual apps struggle to gain massive traction.
- This relationship is highlighted in the "Category Performance: Average Rating vs. Total Installs" chart, which maps out how categories compare in user engagement and overall satisfaction.
Key Takeaway 3: Quality and Monetization Patterns
